Britney slams into car but aces DUI test

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Britney Spears leaves family court in October of 2007.

News flash! Britney Spears was sober when she got behind the wheel in Los Angeles.

The pop wreck passed an alcohol breath test after she got into a minor fender bender - and was released without being cited.

Cops said they followed normal procedures when they asked Brit to take a sobriety test after her Mercedes rear-ended another car in stop-and-go traffic on a suburban highway around 8:18 p.m. Saturday night.

The other car also rammed into a third vehicle, but there were no injuries and no damage to any of the cars, cops said.

Spears, who has made regular headlines with her alcohol-fueled antics, sat patiently in the driver’s seat as paparazzi swarmed around her snapping pictures.

After a few minutes, she climbed into the passenger seat, a video posted on the X17online.com Web site showed.

Spears was later taken to a local fire station, where the breath test was administered. Cops said they tested her because of the timing and circumstances of the crash, not Britney’s bad reputation.

The pop star was released and went out to dinner later that night at Dominick’s in West Hollywood with her mother, Lynne, OBSNews.com and People magazine reported. This time, a bodyguard drove.

There’s rarely any good news for Spears when she drives:

In 2006, she was snapped driving with her son on her lap, a violation of car-seat rules.

A misdemeanor hit-and-run charge from an August 2007 parking lot crash was dismissed after she paid an undisclosed amount to the car’s owner.

In October, she pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid driver’s license.

OBSNews.com Report: Britney Spears Reuniting with Manager Larry Rudolph

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Britney Spears is reuniting with business manager Larry Rudolph, OBSNews reports.

Spears and Rudolph worked together for many years off-and-on, and he is credited with shaping her highly successful early career. They most recently parted ways last year after Spears blamed him, in part, for encouraging her to enter Promises rehab center in Malibu.
Of reports that they have decided to pair up again, a source tells E!: “It’s true. They are working together.”

At the time when Spears parted ways with Rudolph last year, her father, Jamie, sent an email to the New York Post supporting Rudolph despite his daughter’s decision to sever their relationship.

“When Larry Rudolph talked Britney into going into rehab, he was doing what her mother, father and team of professionals with over 100 years of experience knew needed to be done,” Jamie wrote. “She was out of control. Larry was the one chosen by the team to roll up his sleeves and deliver the message, to help save her life.”

Jamie Spears is currently a co-conservator over his daughter’s affairs.

Britney Spears has mental issues, manager says

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sam Lufti, the manager and companion of troubled pop star Britney Spears, has said the singer suffers from “mental issues” and has seen a psychiatrist, talk show host Barbara Walters revealed on Monday.

On her ABC television show “The View,” veteran broadcast journalist Walters said she spoke with Lufti by phone after he reached out to her.

“He said that Britney is suffering from what he describes as mental issues which are treatable,” Walters said on “The View.” “He said that she has been to a psychiatrist and that she, I assume, is starting some kind of treatment.”

Walters said Lufti has been staying with the singer “constantly” and added that Spears has been having “mood swings, she’s been having trouble sleeping.”

Walters said she did not know whether Lufti was indeed telling the truth.

Spears, 26, has seen her life spin out of control in the past year since her late 2006 divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline.

She has exhibited bizarre behavior in public, including being photographed not wearing underwear, and she and Federline have waged a bitter legal battle over custody of their sons.

Late last year, Spears lost custody and visitation rights to Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, and was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol counseling and parental coaching.

She has failed on numerous occassions to appear in Los Angeles family court for hearings dealing with her and Federline’s custody issues.

Even When She’s Not Touring, Britney’s Bringing in Big Bucks

Jan. 25, 2008

Ever get the feeling somebody is making a whole lot of money off Britney Spears besides Britney Spears?

Portfolio magazine estimates the annual value of Britney Spears to the U.S. economy is 110- to 120-million dollars — and that’s when she isn’t even touring.

Portfolio estimates record companies, promoters and licensers make 30- to 40-million dollars because of endorsements, record sales and other business.

It estimates the paparazzi make 4 million dollars from selling photos of the Kentwood native. Celebrity tabloids, web traffic and other media make an estimated 75 million dollars off her in a year. A celebrity tabloid can sell as many as 33 percent more copies if Spears is on the cover.

Her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, pulls in a million dollars a year because of her, and not just the $35,000 a month from spousal and child-support payments. K-Fed reportedly gets $30,000 from nightclubs just to show up.

No-show Britney Spears loses in court again

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears failed on Wednesday in her latest bid to regain the right to see her two young sons after again ducking a court hearing on the issue, Los Angeles court officials said.

Spears, 26, who has either not turned up at numerous hearings or has turned back because of a media crush, was filmed by news media arriving at the Los Angeles court building on time.

But she did not make it to the courtroom where her lawyers and her ex-husband, dancer Kevin Federline, went ahead with proceedings without her, court spokesman Alan Parachini told reporters.

Spears’ lawyer Anne Kiley told family court Commissioner Scott Gordon she did not believe Spears would attend. Kiley gave no explanation and court officials said Spears left the building after about 30 minutes after apparently changing her mind about attending.

After a brief, closed-door hearing Gordon made no change in arrangements which gave Federline sole custody of the couple’s young sons and denied Spears the right to see them, Parachini said. Federline and his lawyers left without commenting.

The troubled pop star, whose personal life has veered out of control in the last 12 months, lost custody of sons Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, in October but had been allowed to see them three times a week in court-monitored visits.

Those visitation rights were stripped on January 4 after Spears refused to hand back the boys to Federline and reportedly locked herself in a bathroom in a fit of hysterics. That episode ended with her being taken away on a stretcher and hospitalized for two days.

Spears failed in a bid last week to regain her visitation rights after the erratic singer made it to the court house but climbed quickly back into her car and drove off after being mobbed by photographers at the entrance to the building.

Is Britney Bipolar?

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

By Karlie Pouliot

The media frenzy surrounding Britney Spears is showing no signs of slowing down. The most recent report from celebrity Web site TMZ.com is that Spears fled south of the border to Mexico to avoid a family intervention.

It’s just one of the many incidents fueling the “Britney” rumor mill as to why the troubled pop star is acting the way she is.

One theory: She’s bipolar.

“Aside from Britney, if someone were to tell me the story of a young woman who had been exposing herself, engaging with multiple sexual partners, drinking heavily and had dyed her hair a bizarre color and was changing it repeatedly and who wasn’t able to maintain her ability in her job or connections with her family — I would put on the list of possibilities a mood disorder like bipolar,” said Dr. Keith Ablow, a FOX News contributor and psychiatrist in a private practice in New York City.

“But I would never hazard a diagnosis of Britney without evaluating her face to face,” he added.

Bipolar disorder, once known as manic depressive disorder, is a serious illness usually marked by extreme highs and lows. The disease can lead to risky behavior, often described as “manic behavior,” as well as damaged relationships and careers and even suicidal tendencies if it’s not treated.

“One of the hallmarks of bipolar is highs and lows during which someone can exhibit really unusual behavior and be very impulsive or, conversely, be very despondent,” Ablow said.

“It’s also not uncommon for people who are bipolar to modulate their moods with alcohol or other substances, and often one of the terrible tragedies about bipolar disorders is until it’s brought under control it can wreak havoc on one’s professional and family life,” he added.

Other symptoms include:

— Inability to sleep or sleeping to excess

— Vast changes in appetite

— Inability to concentrate

— Irrational thinking of a morbid quality or very grandiose quality

— Fixed and false beliefs called delusions

— Feelings of worthlessness or feelings one is responsible for horrific acts in the world

— Overspending tends to go with mania highs, as well as gambling and sexual indiscretions

Manic Behavior?

Since Spears married Kevin Federline in a surprise ceremony in 2004, she has experienced her shares of highs and lows, to say the least.

From giving birth to her sons, just one year apart, to shaving her head in public, being photographed without underwear, beating a car with an umbrella and spending time in rehab, the Spears’ life has been one big tabloid story.

But Ablow pointed out that it’s not the photographers, newspapers and reporters that may be driving her to the edge.

“The problem is not paparazzi,” Ablow said. “It’s people behaving in her life as though she is a commodity when they should be behaving by loving and caring for her. Deep questions that sometimes affect celebrities are about agenda of family and friends.”

When it comes to the family, Ablow said there are crucial steps that need to be taken.

“It is very important to reassure the person you have their best interests at heart,” he said.

Ablow also noted it’s important for family members to remind themselves that the stressful behaviors, words and feelings of someone suffering from bipolar may be due to the condition and not the person.

“All the fallout from bipolar disorder may require a healthy dose of forgiveness,” he said, “because (the actions) can really be due to the illness.”

In the most recent incident, Spears was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles last week by paramedics after police were called to her home because of a custody dispute.

Spears was wheeled out on a stretcher following a stand-off that began when she reportedly refused to hand over her two sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, to ex-husband Kevin Federline’s bodyguard.

In the week that followed, Spears lost her right to visit her sons and sole physical and legal custody was granted to Federline.

TV host Dr. Phil McGraw has also become embroiled in the drama.

According to the Associated Press, Spears’ family said McGraw crossed the line by not keeping his mouth shut after making a house call on the singer last week. Appearing on NBC’s “Today” show, a business manager for Spears’ mother, Lynne, and younger sister, Jamie Lynn, said McGraw had betrayed the family’s trust by talking to the media about Spears’ mental health after showing up at the 26-year-old pop star’s hospital room on Saturday for a visit.

The manager said McGraw was invited to the hospital by Spears’ family, but “he was not invited to make this part of a public display or part of the media.”

Earlier this week, McGraw said that he was shelving plans for a show on Spears’ latest breakdown. He said Spears’ predicament was “too intense” for him to go on with the show.

“Since Britney is a star and has been one since childhood, you can’t be her doctor and broadcaster,” Ablow said. “Right now, the medical and psychiatric treatment needs to proceed confidentially and privately.”

The good news is that there are several effective treatments available for bipolar disorder.

“Conditions often respond best to a combination of psychotherapy and medications,” Ablow noted. “They should always be used in service to bring the person back to equilibrium, so that person can explore what stresses earlier or later in life contributed to his or her instability.”

As for the non-stop media coverage, Ablow said the media will behave as the media does.

“In a perfect world, all media would conspire to slowly detox this young woman from public attention, he noted. “But as a clinician, you wouldn’t want it to end all at once for her because she could feel as if she was ending all at once too.”

If the Mexico reports are any indication, Spears will stay under the media spotlight for sometime to come.

Dr. Phil cancels Britney Spears show

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Dr. Phil’s planned sitdown Monday with Britney Spears’ parents dissolved into accusations he was exploiting the troubled singer’s emotional crackup.

The TV shrink insisted he canceled the taping with Jamie and Lynne Spears “because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family.”

A source close to Dr. Phil McGraw said it was Britney’s parents who cut him off, furious he blabbed about her mental state after visiting her in the psych ward at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“As soon as Jamie realized Dr.Phil was making public statements about Britney, including assessments of her condition, he got angry,” the source told Life & Style magazine. “He started making phone calls to everybody in the family, telling them not to cooperate.”

The show was to air Tuesday.

Britney Spears was held in the hospital overnight after going berserk when ex-hubby Kevin Federline’s bodyguards came to pick up her two baby boys. She was said to be stunned by Dr. Phil’s visit and many of McGraw’s psychiatric colleagues blasted him.

McGraw - now called Dr. Shill by some critics - went on CBS’ sister show “Entertainment Tonight” to defend himself.

“I’ve been working with this family behind the scenes for a long time, longer than you can imagine,” he said, refusing to apologize for trying to help.

“Somebody needs to step up and get this young woman into some quality care,” he said.

Spears doesn’t seem to be in a rush to get help: After checking out of the hospital Saturday, she was in Palm Desert, Calif., with Adnan Ghalib, a 35-year-old paparazzo whose friends and colleagues say may sell Spears out.

“[Ghalib] has always played Britney’s ‘knight in shining armor’ but there is this opportunistic side to him and he could just be in this for the big payday at the end,” a friend told TMZ.com.

“He’s an interesting character,” a former photo editor said of the “charming” Ghalib. “He knows his way around the ladies.”

Jamie Lynn Spears TV Perfect Girl Is Pregnant; Real Families Talk

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By SARA RIMER

CONCORD, Mass. — Talk about teachable moments.

In schools and shopping malls and around the dining room table, the subject of teenage pregnancy and sex was suddenly and uncomfortably in the air as mothers and daughters and fathers, too, talked about — or tried not to talk about — the pregnancy of 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears, who plays the perfect, well-liked and, it is understood, virginal teenage girl on “Zoey 101” on Nickelodeon.

High school girls here wondered aloud on Thursday why no one was talking about contraception. Parents across the country, on the other hand, commiserated over the Internet about how, thanks to Ms. Spears, they were facing a conversation with their 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds about sex.

“Nowadays, nothing’s safe, not even cartoons,” Diana Madruga, who has an 11-year-old daughter, said as she wrapped up her shift as the manager of a Dunkin’ Donuts here in the Boston suburbs.

Shopping at American Girl Place, the doll store, in Manhattan, Sharon Carruthers said she had used the news as an opportunity to talk about the dangers of teenage pregnancy with her 10-year-old daughter, Yasmine. “I want my daughter’s mind in the real world,” said Ms. Carruthers, who is from Deptford, N.J. “But this is not what my daughter is going to do in her life. She knows better. She knows right and wrong.”

Yasmine shook her head. “I never expected her, of all people, to do this,” she said, referring to the girl who in her mind is both Zoey and Jamie, the actress who plays her. “She’s supposed to be the good one in the family.”

High school girls who had already had their hearts broken by the all-too-public life of Ms. Spears’s older sister, Britney, known as a hard-partying mother of two, worried that their younger sisters would be devastated by the news — or, worse, that their sisters might think it was “cool” to be 16 and pregnant.

“She’s the idealistic little girl,” Alicia Akusis, 17, said of the television character Zoey between classes at Concord-Carlisle High School here. “She does perfect in school. Boys like her because she’s pretty, but she doesn’t deal with boys. She’s really smart, she’s really cool, she’s an empowering girl character.”

Ms. Akusis said she hoped that her younger sister and stepsister, who are both 11 and love the show, would not find out about Ms. Spears. “I don’t even want to bring it up with them,” she said. “I don’t want them to be disappointed.” It would be like their discovering that Santa Claus was not real, she said.

Ms. Akusis’s friend Mikala Viscariello, 16, was less concerned with shielding the young than with facing the realities of modern life. “There is no excuse for not using contraception,” Ms. Viscariello said.

Ms. Akusis shot back, “I don’t think she should have gotten pregnant in the first place.”

Perhaps the news of Ms. Spears’s pregnancy should not have been so surprising in what has seemed to be the year of the unwed mother in popular culture. First there was the movie “Knocked Up,” in which a 24-year-old entertainment journalist accidentally gets pregnant in a drunken evening. Now there’s “Juno,” about a 16-year-old who confronts an unplanned pregnancy and decides to have the baby.

But Nickelodeon has won wide acclaim as a sanctuary from the hypersexualized youth culture. That is what burned up Matt Younginer of Columbia, S.C., who was shopping with his 9-year-old daughter, Ansley, in Manhattan.

“She loves ‘Zoey 101,’ ” Mr. Younginer said. “It’s usually Britney Spears who would do that stuff, not Jamie Lynn. She was supposed to be one of the good, clean actresses for girls to follow after. I think it just sends an awful message for the young girls.”

Dan Martinsen, a spokesman for Nickelodeon, said Thursday that “Zoey 101” was one of its most popular shows among viewers 9 to 14.

“Nothing about the content, characters or the storytelling on our air has changed at all,” Mr. Martinsen said. He said that Nickelodeon was discussing a special on the issue with Linda Ellerbee, the television journalist who is the host of “Nick News.” “Whenever an issue becomes so prevalent that it’s inescapable,” Mr. Martinsen said, “her show is where we turn to help kids navigate and interpret and understand it.”

Ms. Akusis and her friends around the cafeteria table at Concord-Carlisle High School seemed to be doing a pretty good job of that themselves. The consensus around the table was that it was unrealistic to think that 16-year-olds would not have sex, and that someone should have talked to Ms. Spears about contraception.

The girls, who had followed the story on TV and the Internet, were also critical of Ms. Spears’s mother, who had been widely quoted as saying that one reason she was shocked by her daughter’s pregnancy was that she had always followed her curfew.

“When I heard that, I started laughing out loud,” Ms. Akusis said. “You can have sex during the middle of the day,” adding, “It’s not like there’s a time limit.”

One of her rituals, she said, was to watch “Zoey 101” with her stepsister and sister every week. “I hope they don’t cancel the show,” she said. “Zoey is still a good role model for little girls.”

Ms. Viscariello agreed. “It would be wrong to cancel her program and tell her she can’t come back because she’s pregnant.” But, she added, Ms. Spears would need to take some time off.

“You need time to figure your stuff out,” she said. “And you’re going to have to take care of a human being.”

She turned to David Prifti, who teaches photography at the high school. “Prifti, what happened when you had Amanda and Lucas? That took up a lot of you and your wife’s time, didn’t it?”

Yes it did, said Mr. Prifti, whose children are 17-year-old twins.

Later, in Mr. Prifti’s class, Greg Moseley, 18, said he was sick of hearing the name Jamie Lynn Spears. “Why do we care about Britney Spears’s little sister?” Mr. Moseley said. “Why does it make a difference? What does it mean? Nothing.”

“All this stuff is impossible to get away from,” he continued, “unless you go to Alaska and live in the woods.”
